Aug. 18th, 2030 05:47 amname: 'ruth overgaard' (the pastor's daughter)
age: ~20
gender: cis female
occupation: lady of the rectory
sexuality: headcanon bisexual
residence: some minor town in jutland, denmark
status: engaged to the curate
romantic interest: irene holm
__________
canon:
'ruth overgaard', unnamed in the original canon, is a supporting character in the danish impressionist author, herman bang's short story, irene holm. she is the provincial contrast to the city-bred irene holm, from 'over there' in copenhagen, a woman secure in her position, where irene holm is portrayed as a woman trapped in an endlessly poor situation, in the denmark of bang's day and age. the short story was released in a newspaper in the late 1880's and published in a collection of short stories in 1890. bang himself was an author of some scandal, his first major work banned for several years in denmark, and he was - both by his contemporaries and later scholars - presumed gay.
setting:
unnamed smaller danish town, most likely in jutland (as the copenhageners simply go by 'those over there'), late 19th century. in contrast to the newcomer, irene holm, who is a foreign element in the town, due to her position as the lady of the rectory and the pastor's daughter, ruth is fully integrated in the setting and represents the provincial jutland and the people living there.
history:
most of what is said of the pastor's daughter is implications. she might be engaged to the curate, as the two characters are often presented together. she is in a position of power at the rectory, so presumably she is either the pastor's only child or the oldest of them. she is educated in music, as she can play the piano, even well enough to render a tarantella and she exhibits 'good christianity' as she is the only truly sympathetic soul towards irene holm.
one must imagine that she has lived a very normal life, by provincial standards. she has gone to school until the seventh or eight grade, received music lessons at home, been educated in christianity by her father and as she got older, become a fixture in the rectory as the daughter who would no doubt be caring for the parish members in their daily worries and problems. at some point, the new curate has come into the picture, her father immediately seeing them as a good match, she has agreed in lack of better options and they have become engaged quickly. now she awaits wedlock. or to be swept away by the other.
personality:
friendly, sympathetic, well-educated (relatively), religious, hard-working, young, conscientious...
